Workshop Information
Objective
This workshop aims to immerse participants in the process of envisioning and creating future architectural spaces. Utilizing Design Fiction principles alongside Extended Reality (XR) technologies, attendees will engage hands-on with the [fiction]XR tool. This session is designed to spur creative exploration and critical thinking, deepening understanding of how immersive technologies can influence future architectural practices.
Workshop Date: October 2nd, October 5th, and October 9th 2023
Workshop Venue: Istanbul Technical University, Prof. Dr. Leman Figen Gül's V-VI Architectural Design Studio
Duration: 3 days - Approximately 10-12 hours (including breaks)
Number of Participants: 23 architecture students
Requirements for Participants:
- A laptop computer
- Having some familiarity with any 3D modeling software (Optional)
- Having some basic knowledge of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality (Optional)
Participants will explore the future of the abandoned Taskisla building for the year 2123, using a modified version of the Time's Up laboratory's futuring exercise framework. The workshop will incorporate a thought experiment and custom design fiction cards designed to stimulate futuristic thinking and enhance engagement and creativity.
Participants will have accomplished the following by the end of the workshop:
- Participants will understand the intersection of design fiction and XR technologies in conceptualizing future spaces.
- They will gain hands-on experience in designing immersive, interactive digital environments using WebXR technologies.
- Attendees will apply design fiction principles to their designs, enhancing their ability to innovate and create.
- Comfort and confidence in using WebXR tools for future architectural spaces will be developed.
Participants will be a part of a platform on https://fiction-xr.com/. They will be able to access their final designs and the [fiction]XR tool even after the workshop ends, and they will be able to use the tool for their future studies and works.
